Headaches are a common problem in pregnancy. Headaches during pregnancy can come in several forms and cause much discomfort and pain to the would-be-mothers. But they usually have no bad impact on the baby and are not signs of any complications. But it is better to be well informed about the pregnancy headache and its types so that you can take them in the right spirit.

What causes pregnancy headaches?

Pregnancy headaches are caused by a variety of factors. Hormonal changes, stress, tension, physical and emotional changes, lack of sleep, changes in diet, low blood sugar and increased pressure on the back and caffeine withdrawal are some of the causes of pregnancy headache. Headaches in pregnancy occur mostly during the first and third trimester.

The most common type of pregnancy headache that bothers would-be-mums is the tension headache. This headache is mostly experienced by women who suffered from it previously. The exact reason behind tension headache is unknown but doctors assume that in the first trimester it is caused by the change in hormonal balance. Estrogen and HCG levels shot up during first trimester. Along with this withdrawal of caffeine and sugar drastically changes the lifestyle. The body takes time to adapt to these various changes resulting in tension headaches.

  • Headache during pregnancy may be due to migraine

Women have three times more chance of having migraine than men and during pregnancy migraine may hit very badly. It is estimated that about 15-20% of pregnant women suffer from it. Some women suffer less severe attacks whereas others may experience frequent and stronger migraine attacks during pregnancy. Migraines typically occur in the first trimester.

Even though migraines may make the would-be-mum suffer a lot but the baby has no risk from it.

Migraine medications should be discontinued during pregnancy as they are known to cause harm to the baby. They can cause birth defects, retardations, malformations and even stillbirth. Pain killers are safe but it is always advisable to consult your doctor before taking any medicine.

Migraines are caused by food cravings that a woman experiences during pregnancy. Lack of rest is another cause behind it. The stress and tension of pregnancy and the changes of it could also be a cause of migraine.

  • Sinus headaches may also occurs during pregnancy

Some women suffer from sinus headaches also during pregnancy.

When to call the doctor

Pregnancy headaches are quite normal and you do not need any medication. But if you experience a headache that is different than normal headaches and if it is accompanied by blurred vision, swelling of arms and face and pain in the abdomen then you should contact your doctor immediately. In the second and third trimester high blood pressure can cause preeclampsia. These symptoms can be a warning of preeclampsia so you should ask for immediate medical help.

How to get rid of headaches during pregnancy, headache remedies

Pregnancy headaches though common are not serious. Hence you should not resort to medicine immediately but try out natural solutions. Understanding the triggers of headache will help you in preventing it. Foods that contain MSG, pickles, fruits like avocados, processed foods and artificial sweeteners and glaring lights, smokes, tobacco smoke etc act as triggers.

  • For sinus headaches you can apply warm compress on the eyes and forehead. For tension headaches cold compress often works well. A warm bath, neck and shoulder massage also works well.
  • Sometimes headaches are triggered by low blood sugar. Try to eat meals in small quantities and at regular breaks. This will ensure a steady blood sugar level.
  • For tension headaches meditation and yoga works wonder.
  • Take adequate rest.
  • Engage in some physical activity outdoors which will give you ample scope to relax.
  • Dehydration can cause headaches also. Drink plenty of fluid.
  • Avoid cramped places like restaurants and crowded parties. Void loud music also.
  • Make your house a comfortable one with plenty of fresh air and natural lights.

Pregnancy headaches can be bothersome but you can prevent them by adopting the above mentioned measures. But if the headaches get worse then do not hesitate to call your doctor as abnormal headaches can be an indication of some serious problem.
